Karla Paula Ginteroy Henry (b.1986 in Cebu, Philippines) is a Filipino Canadian beauty queen and a Cebu-based model. She was crowned as Miss Earth 2008 in her home country, the Philippines where is also the headquarters of Miss Earth organization. This is the second time in a row that a Filipino and half-Canadian held the title of Miss Earth when Jessica Trisko (2007 winner) from Canada is also a Filipino-Canadian.
Karla was born in Limay, Bataan, Philippines, she was raised by her grandparents until the age of four when her family went to reside in Tsawwassen, Canada until she was 14. Even then, she would visit the Philippines every summer and Christmas. Upon her family’s return to the Philippines, they first lived in Albay, Bicol for a year before residing permanently in Cebu.
She began studying for a degree in Tourism at the University of Cebu in 2005 and was working with Marco Polo Plaza Hotel when she was invited to join the Miss Earth pageant. She recently studied the Spanish language. Her closest friend among this year’s top four runner-up winners—named after the four elements—is her pageant roommate Miriam Odemba, Miss Earth-Air from Tanzania. She plans to visit Odemba’s homeland soon. “We plan to climb Mount Kilimanjaro,” she reveals.”
Pageantry
Karla first foray into the world of beauty pageants was as a student representing her school for Miss Intramurals and Miss Milo Olympics. She joined her first professional beauty contest at age 17 in October 2003. However, her next foray would not be until 2006 when she placed second runner-up in the Miss Cebu pageant.
She gained attention when she joined the Binibining Pilipinas 2008. Although considered as a top favorite, she was unplaced in the finals.
Karla again competed at the Miss Philippines Earth 2008 pageant representing Cebu City. It was held at the Crowne Plaza Galleria in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City on May 11, 2008. She made it to the initial cut of ten semi-finalists and competed in the traditional swimsuit, interview, and evening gown competitions. She advanced to the top six in the final question and answer round. At the conclusion of the pageant, she was crowned Miss Philippines Earth 2008 by the outgoing titleholder Jeanne Angeles Harn.
Karla is the first Philippine representative to be crowned Miss Earth. The pageant was held at Clark Expo in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines on November 9, 2008. This was the first time in Miss Earth history that the delegate of the host nation won the title. The Philippines, where the Miss Earth pageant was conceptualized, is the first Asian country to win the title.
